Science can be fun – for everyone: In our project “Knowledge°room” we use vacant business premises and transform them into Pop-up Science Centers. Since 2013 we have been doing that successfully in various neighbourhoods in Vienna. At the Moment we are located in Wien-Margareten, Vienna´s 5th district. In the Knowledge°room everybody who is curious about science and technology has come to the right place. Every inquisitive mind is welcome. Admission is free. The only requirement is a bit of exploration spirit.
Different stations and exhibits invite our guests to discover, to try things out and to puzzle over them. There is, of course, a lot to learn but first and foremost the Knowledge°room is about enjoying working and thinking together.
Regularly changing our thematic focus provides variety and makes sure that even our regulars are never bored. Our visitors are supported by a multilingual team of guides. They help to find answers together and to satisfy the thirst for knowledge. Our visitors are supported by an intercultural team of guides. Just like our visitors, our guides have various mother tongues and diverse cultural backgrounds. However different their histories, what they all have in common is their competence and love for their work.
We are especially proud of the diversity of our visitors. Here, people of different ages, life stories and interests come together. Our motto is: Everyone can get into science. No matter who you are, where you come from or what you do in everyday life, in the Knowledge°room there is something to discover for everybody.
Why support the Knowledge°Room?
- From corona to the climate crisis and digitalization – science and technology play an essential role in our everyday life and future. We need an all hands on deck approach when trying to find innovative solutions to issues we will be facing in the future! Nobody should be excluded and everyone should be able to understand what is going on and contribute.
- The Knowledge°Room is open without the need to register in advance and entrance is free. Children, youth and adults can experiment freely here in a calm and open environment. All questions are welcome and there is no wrong approach to science and technology. If you are stuck, there is always a team of multilingual science guides on site to support you in your process of discovery.
- Hands on mentality, perseverance, problem-solving competencies, abilities in communication, conflict management and team building… In the Knowledge°Room children and adults learn a lot of competencies for their personal and professional life.
- There might be vacant business premises in your neighborhood – wouldn’t it be great if they could be turned into Knowledge°Rooms as well?
- The Knowledge°Room also caters to teachers and educational staff by delivering inspiring new ideas and teaching materials.

The Knowledge°room is suitable for children from the age of eight onwards. Children aged six between six and eight years are asked to come accompanied by appropriate adults or teachers.

Wissens°raum zu Gast im Stand 129, Viktor-Adler-Markt, 1100 Wien
August – Dezember 2016
Unser mit ca. 40m2 bislang kleinster Wissens°raum – ein Marktstandl mitten am belebten Viktor-Adler-Markt im 10. Bezirk in Wien. Drinnen gab es vor allem mobile Experimente und Abwechslung durch Thementage. Bei schönem Wetter wanderten die Experimente einfach nach draußen.
Wissens°raum am Dornerplatz, 1170 Wien
Oktober – Dezember 2015
In einem ehemaligen Friseursalon gab es einen Winter lang vor allem viel Platz für technisches Basteln und Tinkering-Aktivitäten. Weitere Highlights waren Ausstellungsstationen zu Musik und Sprache, eine App, die die Besucher_innen auf eine Experimentier-Ralleye schickte, farbenfrohe Experimente wie die PH-Wert-Messung mit Rotkraut und das „Café der Alltagsdinge“.
Wissens°raum im ehemaligen Woolworth-Kaufhaus, 1210 Wien
Mai – Juli 2015
Viel Platz für Wissenschaft & Technik bot das Erdgeschoß des leerstehenden Kaufhauses in der Schloßhofer Straße – sogar für einen Rollstuhlparcours, der das Thema Mobilität, Barrierefreiheit und Inklusion konkret erfahrbar machte.
Wissens°raum in der Bassena am Schöpfwerk, 1120 Wien
Oktober – Dezember 2014
Diesmal nicht in einem leerstehenden Lokal, sondern im Mehrzweckraum des Stadtteilzentrums „Bassena“ untergebracht, bekam der Wissens°raum viel Besuch aus der Nachbarschaft im Gemeindebau, der Schule am Schöpfwerk und vom Verein „Nachbarinnen“. Kritzelmaschinen, Diskussionsspiele zum Thema Weltraum und Mobilität, und vieles mehr fanden reges Interesse.

Juni – August 2014
Wie in jedem Wissens°raum fanden sich auch hier einige junge Stammgäste, die bald jedes Experiment nicht nur kannten, sondern es auch anderen Besucher_innen zeigen und erklären konnten. So geht Wissensvermittlung auf Augenhöhe!
Wissens°raum in der Schwendergasse, 1150 Wien
Oktober – November 2013
In unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft von Kindergarten, Schule und Volkshochschule gelegen, wurde der Wissens°raum zum Experimentier- und Lernort für Jugendliche und Erwachsene, die an der VHS Deutsch lernten, für Kinder und Familien aus der Nachbarschaft.WR_Folder_1150_Schwendergasse
Wissens°raum am Volkertplatz, 1020 Wien
Juni – August 2013
Eine ehemalige Bankfiliale wurde einen Sommer lang zum Experimentierraum und Wohnzimmer für Kinder und Jugendliche aus dem benachbarten Jugendzentrum. Ihre Lieblingsexperimente zeigten sie zum Abschluss in einer kleinen Science Show auf dem Volkertplatz.WR_Folder_1020_Volkertmarkt

Der erste Wissens°raum fand in der Bock-Halle, einer ehemaligen Konservendosenfabrik, einen idealen Ort mit viel Platz für zahlreiche Hands-on Stationen und zum Experimentieren und einer Atmosphäre von Werkstatt, Labor und Wohnzimmer zugleich.WR_Folder_1170_Ottakringer_Str.
